Stewart’s Shops Helps Youth Thrive Beyond Foster Care

Since 2017, Stewart’s Shops has been a steadfast supporter of KidsPeace’s Kingston Foster Care & Community Programs (FCCP), helping older foster youth gain the skills and confidence to step into adulthood with purpose. Their generous annual support fuels our Adulting 101 program — a hands-on initiative that teaches life skills, builds resilience, and fosters independence.

For youth aging out of foster care, the journey to adulthood can be daunting. Without family support, many face homelessness, unemployment, or limited education opportunities. Adulting 101 is designed to change that, offering mentorship and practical experiences that prepare youth for self-sufficient, fulfilling lives.

Thanks to Stewart’s Shops, these lessons come alive through cooking and budgeting classes, financial literacy workshops, self-defense training, and wellness activities like hiking, yoga, and art in nature.

Last year, a highlight of the program was a trip to New York City to see the Broadway musical Hell’s Kitchen, where youth connected deeply with themes of resilience and self-discovery. This year, the group returned to the city for a new kind of adventure — exploring two museums, including one with a nature-focused exhibit that sparked curiosity and creativity, and taking in the sights of the city on foot.

Closer to home, Stewart’s support also made possible a joyful fall outing to a local farm — rumored to house the world’s largest gnome — where more than 20 youth, foster families, and KidsPeace associates enjoyed classic autumn fun: corn mazes, haystacks, apple and pumpkin picking, dart games, a petting zoo, and more.

“Because of Stewart’s Shops, our youth are not just preparing for adulthood, they’re discovering who they are and what’s possible,” says Ariel Helman, Child and Family Treatment and Support Services Supervisor and Article 29i Clinical Consultant at KidsPeace’s Kingston FCCP office.

We are deeply grateful to Stewart’s Shops for believing in our youth and investing in their future. Together, we’re helping young people not only live independently — but thrive.
